Finding Mental Health Professionals in Detroit, Michigan

Known as one of the cultural centers of the Midwest due to its contribution to music, art, and architecture, Detroit is the largest city in Michigan. Nationwide, it is the 23rd most populous city with 673,104 living there as of 2017- although if you count the metropolitan area it is home to more than 4.3 million. Unfortunately, these figures reflect a sharp decline in Detroit’s population over the past few decades. The disappearance of manufacturing and industrial jobs has had a huge impact on the region.

This has had widespread effects not only on those who worked in those fields but also on the city due to the dwindling population that left many homes and commercial buildings abandoned. High rates of poverty and additional problems are real issues for the city, sometimes leading to other concerns. It is all too common for mental health to be affected by social problems. This disruption in the city’s economy has left many residents in poverty and at risk for mental health issues due to worry and stress.

Tackling the City’s Mental Health Concerns

A report from the CDC reported that between the years 1999 and 2016, the suicide rate in Michigan increased by 33%. With Detroit being the major population center of the state, it is a primary place to start tackling this problem. According to this same report by the CDC, factors that contribute to this problem are relationship issues, substance abuse, and other health problems. Being able to provide resources for those who may be at risk for suicide and give them access to the physical and mental health care they may need is an important first step in tackling this growing problem. Having the chance to connect with qualified mental health professionals within Metro Detroit will play a pivotal role in stopping this troublesome trend.

If you are seeking help and guidance for issues including stress, depression, or other conditions that are adversely affecting your daily life, we can help with your search for a therapist or mental health professional in Detroit. Our goal is to help connect you with a professional that fits in with your life and schedule.

Although it can be difficult to admit you need help, asking for support is a brave step forward toward a better future. When the time is right for you to find a therapist in the Detroit area we want to be there to make the search easy. The beginning of your search should start with questions about what your own needs are and what you are hoping to get out of the process.

Beginning Your Search

To find someone who can help you, you first need to consider why it is you are looking for additional assistance and what you want to accomplish with a professional. If you can pinpoint the issues you are dealing with, or at least provide a picture of your unique circumstances, a therapist or other mental health professional will be better able to assist and suggest different methods of treatment. And because you will be working so closely with the mental health professional, thinking about your communication preferences and styles may also be a good thing to think about ahead of time. Here is a list of questions you can start with- these are by no means comprehensive but provide a good starting point:

  • What kind of experience do you want to have and what are you trying to gain by speaking with a professional?
  • Does the gender of the therapist matter to you? Are you more comfortable with a male or a female, or does it even matter to you?
  • What length of time do you have to devote to the process?
  • Are you suffering from a very specific problem (such as an eating disorder) that might be better to see a specialist about?

These questions will hopefully shed some light on what you do and don’t need. It will help narrow down your search for the right mental health professional for you which is such a critical part of developing the rapport needed to work together.

Therapy and Your Insurance Provider

Sometimes the specific therapist you see may be dictated by the health insurance coverage that you have. For example, your provider might have a network of mental health professionals that you will need to choose from if you want the provider to cover any or all the costs. Therefore, it is a good idea to reach out to your health insurance company to ask which therapists and services are accessible within the rules of your health plan.
