Mental Health Resources in Irving, Texas

Irving is a main core city and an inner suburb circle in the city of Dallas. The city has a total area of 67.7 square miles (175 km2) and approximately 240,373 people in 2017 according to the U.S. Census. It is a humid subtropical climate. The median income in the U.S. Census for the year 2000 was $50,172 for a family and there were approximately 10% of the population below the poverty line. Citigroup and Verizon are the largest employers. In 2007, it was reported that an estimated 33% of the population was from outside of the U.S. It was the first home of the NFL team Dallas Cowboys, and was the home of the Texas Musicians Museum, but they left the city without any cultural attractions when they decided to leave in 2018.

The rate of homeless people has increased in Irving during the past year. In 2018, Texas State lawmakers recognized the link between mental health illnesses with high crime risks and homelessness. In the city’s Good Elementary School, 93% of the children qualify for free or reduced-cost meals. The Brookings Institution, a nonprofit public-policy organization, reports that the inner-ring suburbs are now facing the same challenges as in major cities. The report shows that about 47% of the population living below the poverty line was in the suburbs in the Dallas area in 2008, up from 41% in 2000. Approximately one in five children in Texas is suffering from a mental illness. An estimated one in four people in Texas experiences some form of mental illness, but the state ranks 49th in the nation in per capita public mental health expenditure. The state of Texas had a 4.2% divorce rate in 2016 according to the National Vital Statistic Report compared to the U.S. rate of 6.9% in the same year.

Human Rights Campaign Municipal Equality Index named Irving as one of the worst cities to live in for the LGBT community. They rated 6 points out of 100. The index studies how inclusive municipal laws, policies, and services are for the LGBT+ community. Irving had one of the lowest scores in the nation, including in anti-bullying practices. LGBT+ adults are significantly more likely to suffer from mental illness than heterosexual adults. LGBT+ students in the Fort Worth area are about three times more likely to have considered suicide than non-LGBT+ students in 2017.

Getting Help

Like many cities, Irving’s mental health services and providers can not keep up with the growing amount of extensiveness in the city’s mental health needs and the growing number of residents. It can become frustrating trying to find help when there are limited resources. Finding a good connection promptly can make all the difference. When meeting a therapist, be sure to list your symptoms and concerns to make certain that you remember everything that you want to discuss. List any questions you may have about the treatment plan and what your goal is to achieve from therapy. Many therapists will provide a complimentary consultation.
