Salt Lake City is a bustling city located in a mountain valley and is home to over 200,000 residents. The capital of Utah, the city has a vibrant downtown, a dedicated ski community, and multiple colleges and universities. These improvements have provided positive gains for the area and helped spur the city’s growth over the past decade. Top employers for the area include Intermountain Healthcare, Utah State Government, University of Utah, and Brigham Young University. As a state, Utah has one of the lowest unemployment rates (3.5 %) when compared to the national average (4.4%), and the state’s median income of $65,977 is ranked 11th-highest in the United States. Salt Lake City boasts a positive reputation in offering its’ citizens great access to mountains and trails, entertainment and nightlife, and a growing economy.

Mental health is an issue that faces those who live in Salt Lake City. Of depressed adults, the city had a higher rate (25.4%) of doctor-diagnosed depression than the average for the state of Utah. For serious mental illness, Utah ranks as one of the highest in the United States, with a rate of 5.14%, just behind first-place West Virginia with 5.48% of the population. Work to decrease these stats has begun with community partners collaborating as they execute programs such as the QPR Institute, Working Minds, and SafeTALK. Through training programs such as these, the public has a chance to learn the warning signs of suicide, how to refer that person in need of a specific resource, and hopefully, save a life. Utah’s state legislature announced the funding investment in 90 elementary schools to start a suicide prevention program to educate students on how to recognize these issues along with creating Hope Squads, a group of nominated students by their peers that are trained to watch for warning signs, within their school community.
