Overview of Mental Health Resources in Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta is one of the largest cities in the United States. It is home to the largest airport, that is for sure. Millions of people pass through the city every week on their way to destinations all over the world. But, what’s it like to live in Atlanta?

The median household income in Atlanta is actually higher than the U.S. average at over $62,000. It has steadily increased over the last few years. However, the number is skewed based on people moving to the area to take high-paying jobs. The average person in Atlanta doesn’t necessarily make such a high salary.

As far as overall mental health in Georgia, it is in the lower half of the United States. Georgia ranks 34th when it comes to mental health. In fact, the state has started to slip even further down the rankings over the last few days. This is because of a lack of mental health resources, especially amongst younger people.

Mental Health Statistics for Atlanta, Georgia

Although Atlanta is certainly a booming city with a vibrant culture, it has its share of mental health issues. Studies have shown that 6 out of 10 people with a mental health illness in Georgia do not seek mental health treatment. This is largely due ti a lack of resources.

The largest population in Atlanta who suffer from mental health issues are those in the low-income sector. Due to a lack of Medicaid expansion, many people simply don’t have insurance. They don’t have the resources to pay for mental health treatment even if they knew where to go to find it.

Impact of Not Receiving Treatment in Atlanta, Georgia

There are only about 500,000 people in Atlanta. The number of mental health professionals is so low that most people with mental health issues go to the emergency rooms instead. This leads to not only a lack of treatment, but also an inadequacy of the treatment provided.

A lack of mental health resources can lead to:

  • Suicide
  • Divorce
  • Homelessness
  • Unemployment
  • Cyclical poverty
  • Substance abuse

What Makes Atlanta Unique When It Comes to Mental Health?

Atlanta is like any other metropolitan in the United States. There are pockets of wealth and pockets of poverty. There are large universities. The city is home to many large corporations that provide the area with plenty of jobs and an infusion into the economy.

Divorce Rate in Atlanta, Georgia

The divorce rate in Atlanta is one of the highest in the country at over 11%. A large reason for this is due to the poverty issues in the area. People are afraid to get married when their finances aren’t settled. Poverty is also known to be one of the leading causes of divorce in this country so the high divorce rate is not surprising.

With mostly younger people moving into the area, it’s important for the institution of marriage that people feel more comfortable entering marriage.

Mental Health Resources in Atlanta, Georgia

There is a mental health crisis in Atlanta today. There aren’t enough resources and people simply don’t have the resources to pay for mental health treatment. People simply don’t have the money for health care let alone mental health care.

There are about 200 mental health professionals for every 100,000 people in Atlanta. This is actually a healthy ratio. The problem is that people don’t have access to this care.

Atlanta is also home to one of the largest and most dangerous prisons in the With so many people in prison (or not long out of prison) mental health issues permeate the Atlanta area.
