Guide to Finding Mental Health Professionals in Houston, Texas

Recognized as the fourth-largest city in the United States as well as the largest city in the state of Texas, Houston boasts a population of 2.3 million residents. Houston is mentioned on several “best of” lists including the Travel + Leisure magazine’s roundup of America’s Favorite Cities and the Hotwire.com index of most affordable U.S. vacation destinations. However, the city faces a variety of issues as it was recently ranked the 2nd worst city in Texas to raise a family. Considered the most racially and ethnically diverse major metropolitan area in the United States, ahead of New York City, Houston’s multiculturalism is due to the large number of immigrants that relocate to the area due to the low cost of living, proximity to Latin America and the city’s role as a hub for refugee resettlements. There are an estimated 575,000 undocumented immigrants that reside within the city area resulting in 8.7% of the population – double the national average.

Since Hurricane Harvey in 2017, mental health has continued to be a topic of conversation. The recent census reported that a significant portion of the Houston population under the age of 65 (27% ) does not have health insurance. A 2018 Harvey Impact Study of Serious Psychological Distress conducted by the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, indicated that 18% of Harris County residents were distressed compared to the 4% of the national average. That rate increased to 37% if their vehicle was damaged and 48% if the destruction of their home occurred during the storm. The research found that children experienced higher levels of separation anxiety from parents and pets, especially those from the Latino population. Lack of health insurance, experiences from a historic hurricane, and everyday issues do contribute to stress, anxiety, and sleeplessness amongst a host of other mental health issues. Mental health does not discriminate against race, age, or gender, and finding the right therapist does not need to add to that stress or confusion. Whether you or someone you know suffers from anxiety or bipolar disorder, you do not have to face these issues alone at home, in relationships, or at work or school. It is important when sharing your thoughts and feelings to make sure that this is a person that you are comfortable with during your session. First, determine the ailments that you suffer from while looking for recommendations and our community of trained professionals can help you demystify the process. When selecting your qualified Houston professional, make sure that they are local and that their office hours are compatible with yours. This ensures success when scheduling appointments and the ability to keep them with ease during your journey.

Questions to aid you during the research process are:

  • Why am I seeking help?
  • What are my goals in therapy?
  • Am I more comfortable with a man or a woman?
  • Are there any personal aspects I’m not willing to discuss?
  • Do I want to be able to lead the discussion, or have it led?
  • How long do I plan to attend therapy?
  • Does my problem need extra specialization?

Your therapy journey is about you and your needs and you need to find the right chemistry with your therapist. In many cases, a strong relationship with your therapist will aid in the success of your treatment as they will help you process the challenges that arise in your life. Our trusted network of mental health professionals will offer a wide array of effective therapies and treatments that can fit your needs. Whether you suffer from depression or OCD disorders, you do not have to face these issues alone.
